After following Mia Kani Photography LLC's founder, Sowmya Kanikkannan, on Facebook and Instagram for quite some time, I was so excited to recently meet her in person at a social event. As a person, Sowmya has the rare gift of making people feel right at home in her company, and as a professional she captures the joy of family life with graceful ease. She's also a local Chappaqua mom with a young daughter. She lives the life of our MacKID community and understands the demands of busy professional careers, the pursuit of passions, and the beauty of parenthood. Her shared perspective allows her to work with clients in ways that bring comfort and laughter, allowing each member's distinctive personality to shine through, as well as their love for each other. What is the story behind your business?
I've been a photographer for over a decade now - first, starting with travel photography and portraiture as a hobby and eventually exploring other genres including macro, landscape, family and newborn. My interest in family and newborn photography increased obviously after my daughter was born as it gave me great joy in documenting her and our time together. With encouragement from my husband and my family and friends, Mia Kani Photography was born three years ago. While I started my business in upstate NY as we were living there then, since our relocation to Chappaqua, I have had the privilege of photographing local families and families all over Westchester over the last year. I am enjoying getting to know this beautiful area with a camera in hand and meeting some amazing families and gorgeous babies as I capture real, ever-lasting memories for them.
What are some fun facts about you?
1. I've travelled to 29 countries in the world and love traveling!
2. I love kids and they (usually) love me - one of my clients has dubbed me the 'child whisperer.'
3. I love Disney princess songs thanks to my young princess loving daughter. I can hear Moana sing all day long!
4. I am a physician and I often love blending my two passions (medicine and photography) together to tell stories of people and their vulnerability, authenticity and emotions in life. My photography is very emotive and full of life and love capturing the little things that matter.
5. I REALLY love guacamole and chips!
6. I love Marvel movies and a good comedy!
7. I have an MBA from the University of Massachusetts.
8. I learned Indian Classical Dance growing up.
What does your business offer its customers?
At Mia Kani Photography, I pride myself on excellent customer experience. What is unique about my photo sessions is that I love getting to know my clients and they get to know me as well - this lets us connect and have a level of comfort which helps bring out your personalities and those precious connections in your family during our portrait sessions.
While family and newborn photography are two of the services that I offer, I also have an online art shop where I share my photographic artwork - macros, travel, landscape. The ability to create art and see beauty in the everyday using photography as a medium is one of the many things I love about photography.
As a lifestyle photographer, my focus is more on telling the story of your family using artistic and modern techniques in photography rather than traditional portraits. Turnaround time is fast, and I provide an all-inclusive session package with options to create wall art and other family heirlooms that will last generations. Plus, I am a lot of fun to hang out with so you wouldn't want to miss a chance to have a session with me 😉
Lifestyle photography is a newer genre - the final images are different than what one expects from a traditional portrait session, and I would love for my customers to notice how this photographic style can make you see and feel the moments that you cherish in your family - real moments of love that you will always want to remember. These are the moments that you will never want to forget. And these are the ones we will capture in our sessions. What are you most proud of?
I am proud to be part of this community and to work alongside with some amazing businesses. Although we are new to the area, I have had so many positive interactions with other like-minded businesses and amazing families that I have had the honor to photograph this year.
