What is Red Light Therapy anyway?

Red Light Therapy's more scientific name is photobiomodulation.  If we that break that tongue twister down into its parts; photo = light, bio = living, modulation = change.  So... photobiomodulation is the use of light to create a change in life.

More specifically, photobiomodulation refers to the use of red light, concentrated at certain wavelengths, that target the mitochondria (a.k.a. the powerhouses) of our cells.  The mitochondria produce ATP, which is the form of energy that your body needs for EVERY single function it performs (think of ATP like the gasoline that fuels your car.)  When mitochondria absorb concentrated red light, they produce more ATP which boosts energy and therefore increases the body's natural ability to heal.

Okay, so what is it used for?

Red light therapy (RLT) increases cellular energy, so it has a wide variety of applications.  One of the most popular applications of RLT is to reduce pain and inflammation (arthritis, tendonitis, etc.), but there are many other amazing benefits such as:

Wound healing: RLT naturally boosts collagen production which can aid in healing wounds and preventing the formation of scar tissue.

Wrinkles & Acne: Since RLT boosts collagen production, it's used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improve overall skin elasticity.  It can also help reduce the appearance of acne scarring and reduce redness by addressing inflammation caused by acne.

Mood & Sleep: RLT can help correct disruptions in our circadian rhythms that result from blue light emitted  by our cell phones, computer screens, and TVs, as well as fluorescent lights in many worksplaces.  These disruptions make it harder to fall asleep at night, but RLT can improve sleep patterns and overall mood.

Red light therapy is an excellent addition to a wellness lifestyle, even if you are not experiencing pain.
