The Westchester Wood Comes Alive at the Fall Forest Festival

The Rewilding School crafts a day of learning and laughter in Mt Kisco

By Jon Sherburne August 16, 2023

There’s a buzz in the air, and it’s not just the cicadas humming the last notes of summer in the trees. The land itself is vibrating with activity–it’s The Rewilding School Forest Festival!

Folks are gathered around a fire as one of our naturalists from The Rewilding School shows the traditional methods we use to construct them, and a nearby group learns about wild plants and which ones are safe (and delicious!) to roast over the open flame. There are craft tables set up with wild clay and leather scraps, and families work together to make pots, pouches and bags together. Some of the kids looking for activity head over to Rewilding School's Coach Gary to learn archery at our range. It’s one of the best and brightest ways to welcome the coming Fall.

Families come from all over Westchester every year to experience the Forest Festival for a day of connecting with people and learning skills. We gather on the traditional lands of the Wappinger People with the express purpose of celebrating the Marsh Sanctuary and giving the community new methods to cherish the space we live on. It’s a great way to get the family together to try something new.

“Time outdoors helps everyone,” says Rewilding School Founder, Eric Stone, “but where we really see a difference is when that time is spent making deeper connections.  When a child picks and eats their first wild grape or when a parent makes their first fire with friction, a bond to the land is built.  Add in some expert naturalists to safely guide folks through the woods and you’ll find a recipe for healthy, happy, and connected families.”

The Rewilding School Fall Forest Festival is at Marsh Sanctuary in Mount Kisco on September 9th from 10am-3pm.  The cost is $30 per car although donations to the access fund for lower income students are welcome.
