Review: The Lightning Thief - The Percy Jackson Musical on Broadway

By Lisa Dunleavy December 23, 2019

One of my boys' favorite Middle School book series was the Percy Jackson stories written by Robert Riordan. They read all five books and saw both movies multiple times. Now Percy Jackson fans have another way to experience the story -- The Lightning Thief - The Percy Jackson Musical playing now at the Longacre Theater on Broadway in NYC. This limited 16 week engagement finishes on January 5th so for any fans of the series, I highly recommend getting tickets soon!

The show, starring Chris McCarrell as Percy Jackson, follows the book faithfully and brings all your favorite characters - Grover, Annabeth, Clarisse, Chiron and Mr. D - to the stage. The show has great energy with terrific rock music and all of the actors have wonderful voices. This is an ambitious production as they have to try and capture this vivid and complicated story including scenes of the ocean and the underworld. They manage to do this with creative special effects and lighting creating a fun, family-friendly show that really appeals to the elementary/middle school age child. We all knew the story so well that it was easy to follow, however, if you haven't read the books I would recommend seeing the movie before you go to familiarize your kids with the story.
