If you are looking for ideas of something to do during the remainder of the school break – head over to The Maritime Aquarium in nearby Norwalk, CT. The Aquarium is open this whole week, including New Year’s Day, and they have extended their special exhibit “Living Lights” through January 3rd. This cool exhibit features fascinating creatures that have the unique ability to glow in the dark, through fluorescence or a natural process called bioluminescence. Displayed animals include flashlight fish, porcupine fish, chain catsharks, crystal jellyfish, a scorpion and more. “Living Lights” is free with regular admission to the aquarium.
The Maritime Aquarium also has Connecticut’s largest IMAX theater, but this theater is being razed for a railroad-bridge replacement project. You can catch a final celebration of fan-favorite films from the last three decades from now through January 18. See their website to confirm titles and times. Most 45-minute films cost $5. COVID protocols include reduced capacity, required masks and enhanced cleaning between shows. Advance purchase strongly recommended. See the schedule, learn more and reserve tickets at www.maritimeaquarium.org/imax.
If you would rather be outside, the Maritime Aquarium hosts Seal-Spotting and Birding Cruises on many weekends through April 4th. Next cruises are January 9 and 10.
The Maritime Aquarium is located at 10 N. Water Street, Norwalk, CT. For more information call (203) 852-0700 or visit their website at www.maritimeaquarium.org. Their hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily.
