There's a talented mama in our area that you've got to get to know for special gifts or one-of-a-kind children's clothing! Chinmy Roy is the founder of Lyssa's Larkspurs and she creates beautiful and high-quality items for kids of all different ages. I've purchased items myself when Chinmy was a vendor at our fall vendor showcase and my children have gotten so much wear out of them! They wash well and the gender-neutral options made for great hand-me-downs, too! Lyssa's Larkspurs also offers "grow with me" styles that can be used for multiple years and seasons. Kids will love how soft the items are and the whimsical designs are sure to bring smiles! Read more below about how she developed her skills and grew her talents into her own business.
What is the story behind your business? How did you get started?
Fabric art has always been my passion. I also had a unique style that was a mix of comfort and personal preference over current trending fashion. For a few years I lost access to a sewing machine and during that time my passion led me to fabric painting and hand embroidery and even crochet. This came in handy when I was personalizing outfits for all the little ones in the family with their favorite theme!
When I became a stay-at-home mom to my son, this passion helped give me a break from the routine. I opened my Etsy store during that time selling personalized outfits. But having my daughter changed the entire trajectory of my sewing and I decided it was time to go back to my true passion, sewing!
There was no looking back from there. It became my therapy when I was alone with 2 very young kids with no family and friends nearby for support. My kids loved to sit by me picking colors and choose their favorite prints and absolutely loved it when they got to wear them! Now with 3 kids it is a roller coaster ride.
I was making more things than my kids could ever use. And I loved making custom fantastic over the top pieces and my daughter almost always preferred to match her brothers, so they just sat in the closet. I had an Etsy shop early on, but it was put on hold while I was traveling and then the pandemic hit. My youngest was born during this time period. And I pushed reopening the shop until he was a bit older.
I renamed the shop to Lyssa’s Larkspurs to reflect the changes, both in my life and my shop before I reopened the shop and spent a lot of time researching and making sure that the shop follows all the CPSC Compliance requirements, especially for the child safety requirements.
What are some fun facts about your business?
Bringing a smile to the wearer’s face is my priority. This means a lot of my fabric choices are guided by my kids and their interests. I also source the fabric from other small shops within the United States most of the time. Some of these small shops source their fabric from Europe, but most of them are milled within the US and then custom printed using an Eco-friendly process. Most of the fabrics that I offer in my shop are the bases that I have used for myself and my own kids and confirmed that they last a good while.
What does your business offer its clients?
High quality custom handmade clothing for the kids. I generally stick with sizes smaller than 8, but as my own kids grow older, I keep broadening my horizon. We have a variety of outfits like loungewear, everyday outfits, swimwear and even fancier pieces that are one of a kind. With 2 boys and 1 girl, I strive to bring a collection for both genders alike or at least offer more gender-neutral options! These are all done pre-order style to avoid a lot of inventory taking up space. There will be limited Ready to Ship pieces and more options to make the sizes per request.
What are you most proud of?
Custom creations. I have a few one-of-a-kind pieces I have made over the years that I am extremely proud of. And I love seeing the pieces I made being worn and enjoyed by the wearer.
